Militant Cinema--ongoing

“Militant Cinema” archival research focuses on militant 8mm, 16mm film production, visualisation, propaganda with moving images, and testimonial practices of progressive groups starting with the Young Cinema Movement, a group gathered with the Young Cinema manifesto signed in 1968, to the beginning of the 1980s when progressive organizations, groups, trade unions, and university student societies such as Real Cinema, TİP (Workers’ Party of Turkey), TKP (Communist Party of Turkey), Revolutionary Path, İGD (Progressive Young People’s Association), İKD (Progressive Women’s Association), DİSK (Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions of Turkey), Sine-sen (Cinema Workers Union), Yeraltı Maden-İş, (Underground Mining Workers Union), TÖB-DER (All Teachers’ Alliance and Solidarity Association), ODTÜ-ÖTK (Middle East Technical University Student Representatives Cinema Group), Boğaziçi University Cinema Group.

Film assets of Turkey produced in the 1970s were confiscated by the martial courts of the 12 September coup making them subject of trials; some assets were taken by their creators to exile, some were taken to the Netherlands Institute of International Social History and Soviet Union. Years ago, when I first started my quest of those films, I came across non-edited, raw film material of the “Revolutionary Path” in some private archives, warehouses. When 8mm films started to appear in garbage, flea markets in the beginning of the 2000s, I started to collect those films… To my surprise, I found among those family 8mm films, three 20 minute films of 1977, 1978 1st May, and 1978 Congress of the İGD. I contacted people who recorded those images with the idea of dubbing those films that were generally shot silent. Meanwhile, during interviews with those people I was collecting photographs and dia-positives taken in the act scenes… In time, I started to collect printed visual material such as fliers, film posters, movie scripts, magazines, etc. especially produced by the Militant Film Makers. A couple of years ago, film assets of TKP, TİP, and DİSK that were confiscated by the 12 September Martial Courts appeared in Ankara garbages. I ventured on restoring and categorizing those films, finding out people who made them, conducting visual interviews with those people. I concentrated on collecting stories of film archives taken abroad in the post 12 September years. With those moving images that came to light for the first time, this visual archival research focuses on the 8mm militant visualization practices of the 1970s from 1st May demonstrations, to mine workers’ resistances, funerals, propaganda movies, festivals, congresses, and shanty town protests.

Militan Sinema--süregiden

“Militan Sinema” arşiv araştırması Türkiye’de 1968 yılında imzaladıkları Genç Sinemacılar bildirisiyle bir araya gelen Genç Sinema Hareketinden başlayarak, 1980’lerin hemen başına kadar süren Gerçek Sinema, TİP, TKP, Devrimci Yol, İGD, İKD, DİSK Sine-Sen, Yeraltı Maden-İş, TÖBDER, ODTÜ-ÖTK Sinema Grubu, Boğaziçi Üniversitesi Sinema Grubu gibi sol örgütlerin, grupların sendikaların üniversite topluluklarının 8mm, 16mm Militan film üretim, görselleştirme, hareketli imajla yapılan propaganda ve tanıklık pratiğine odaklanıyor.

Türkiye’de 1970’lerde üretilmiş film varlığına 12 Eylül sıkıyönetim mahkemeleri tarafından el konulup davaların konusu yapılmış, bir kısmı üreticileri tarafından yurtdışına kaçış süreçlerinde yanlarında götürülmüş, bir bölümü de Hollanda’daki Uluslararası Sosyal Tarih Enstitüsüne ve Sovyetler Birliğine kaçırmıştı. Yıllar önce bu filmlerin peşine düştüğümde bazı özel arşivlerde, depolarda “Devrimci Yol”a ait montaj dışı kalmış, artık filmlere rastlamıştım. 2000’li yılların başlarında 8mm filmler çöplerde, eskici pazarlarında belirdiğinde 8mm film toplamaya başladım… Şaşırtıcı bir şekilde bu aile 8mmleri içinde mesela İGD’ye ait 1977, 1978 1 Mayıs ve 1978 Kongresinin 20’şer dakikalık 3 filmi fark ettim. İmajları kaydedenlere ulaşarak çoğunlukla sessiz olan bu film birikimini seslendirmeye başladım. Bir yandan çeşitli alanda çekim esnasında çekilmiş fotoğrafları, dia pozitifleri de topluyordum bu mülakatlar sırasında… Zaman içinde özellikle Militan Filmcilerin ürettikleri bildiriler, film afişleri, senaryolar, dergiler gibi basılı görsel malzemeyi de toplar oldum. Birkaç sene önce Ankara’da 12 Eylül Sıkıyönetim Mahkemeleri tarafından el konulmuş TKP, TİP, DİSK kaynaklı bir film varlığı çöplerde belirdi, bir yandan da bu filmleri restore ederek, tasnif etmeye filmleri üretenlere ulaşmaya, filmler eşliğinde görsel görüşmeler yapmaya, özellikle 12 Eylül sonrası yurtdışına kaçıran film arşivlerinin kaçırılma hikayelerini toplamaya başladım. Bu görsel, arşivsel, araştırma neredeyse ilk kez ortaya çıkan bu hareketli imajlardan, 1 Mayıslar, maden direnişleri, cenaze törenleri, propaganda filmleri, şenlikler, kongreler, gecekondu eylemlerine, 1970’lerdeki 8mm militan görselleştirme pratiğine odaklanıyor.
